When you've made the decision to file bankruptcy protection, it is important to select a competent attorney with bankrtupcy experience.  Choosing a bankruptcy attorney can be an intimidating decision and should not be taken lightly as the attorney's experience can greatly impact the effectiveness of the bankruptcy.  Whether you've already met with a bankruptcy attorney in St. Louis or this is the first time you've made an effort to select an attorney, you should consider the following tips before hiring a bankruptcy lawyer.

  1. Don't Procrastinate
It is only human nature to avoid doing things we don't want to do.  However, procrastination in this situation could eliminate some options for you.  Meeting with a bankruptcy lawyer does not mean you have to file bankruptcy.  It is an opportunity to learn how the law may help you.  In fact, in some cases an experienced bankruptcy lawyer can provide you with advice that may avoid the need to file bankruptcy.  It is important that you don't delay meeting with an attorney to have the best possible number of options.
  2. Don't Rely on Yellow Page Ads
Some people still use the Yellow Page directories and think the size of the ad indicates the prowess of the attorney.  Never make a decision solely based on an advertisement.  In fact, the Missouri Bar specifically requires attorneys to make this disclaimer with any advertisement.
  3. Look for Signs of Specialization
Attorneys are not allowed to state they "specialize" in a practice area or have "expert" experience. However, some attorneys choose to focus exclusively to practice a specific area of law.  A law firm that has extensive years of experience practicing a single area of law is likely to have the prowess you want from a bankrtupcy attorney.  At The Bankruptcy Company, we focus on bankruptcy exclusively.
  4. Understand the Full Cost of Filing Bankruptcy
Not all representation is equal.  If you find a deal for a low cost attorney, you need to be very careful that you are getting the services you require
  5. Look for Professional Associations
Look for a bankruptcy attorney who is belongs to organizations beyond the Missouri Bar.  Membership in professional, practice related associatiions can indicate an attorney's commitment to that practice area and provide an opportunity for continuous education and improvement.  One example of a national professional association for bankruptcy lawyers is National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA - www.nacba.org )

At The Bankruptcy Company, we think we bring best in class service and expertise to every client filing bankruptcy.  Bankruptcy law is all we do.  If you haven't met with one of our lawyers yet, we encourage you to schedule a FREE Consultation using the form on our website or calling our office at 314-961-9822.  You will speak with an actual experienced bankruptcy attorney, free of charge and without obligation.
